Ever feel like you're constantly running on empty? Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress.
Hi, this is Grant Herbert, Leadership and Sustainable Performance Coach. Today, I want to have a conversation with you about going from burnout to breakthrough — building resilience in an environment of high stress.
Stress is an amazing thing. It is something that every single one of you needs in your life so that you can actually get things done. But there are two types of stress.
You have what's called eustress — stress that does not last for long periods of time.
Then there is distress — the unhealthy stress. This is prolonged stress that continues and becomes chronic.
In the work I do — predominantly in law firms — I help great technical leaders become great leaders of themselves and others. The incidence of distress reaching the point of mental illness is one in two, compared to the general population, which is one in five.
The first thing I want to do is give you an overview of three key areas you need to be aware of and work on: resilience, stress management, and personal agility.
Today is the day for you to draw a line in the sand and say, "I need to start looking after myself."
Resilience is something every single one of you can build — and you need to. Burnout is not a badge of honour — it is a warning sign. I want to encourage you to come on this journey with me, where you commit to taking small and consistent steps to safeguard your health, your energy, and therefore, your performance. I will see you then.
